Voice chat not working in Yahoo Chat

If you are using Vista and have been attempting to access voice chat in the Yahoo chat rooms you may notice that the talk button is greyed out. This happens because Vista doesn't ship with the TSP codec ( true speech codec) that is required to activate voice chat. You can download that here: http://www.4shared.com/file/51189070/7608c68c/tsp_codec_install.html?dirPwdVerified=19011927

Once you've installed it, reboot your computer and try to activate Yahoo chat again.

This is the first step in rectifying the voice chat problems. If this isn't working for you, you may have to plug either a microphone or headset into the microphone jack. This is a sure fire way to get things working again in Yahoo chat.

Also if you guys find the link above doesn't work let me know I'll keep looking around for other sources for the codec

networking with Vista

So you have a few computers set up at home and you are now ready to get them networked, great! Now where do you start? Networking can be a cumbersome task but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty much second nature. With that in mind, on to the task at hand.

First off Vista features a network and sharing centre, it's here that you can set up and manage all your networks. You can access this from the start menu--->Network--->Network and sharing centre at the top. In order for your computers to be networkable they have to be discoverable by other computers. So you will want to go to each of your computers and turn on the network discovery feature. You can see this in the main window of the network and sharing centre feature. After this there are several other sharing options such as file sharing, printer sharing and media sharing. You can specify whether you want to share these aspects with other computers or not. From here you can further specify what kind of priveleges other people on other computers can have to your computer. These would be things like allowing people read only access to files or only allowing people with network passwords to access files on other computers.

Once you have turned on network discovery in the network and sharing section, you are pretty much set to go, again you will need to specify what will be shared and what won't be, but as you can see it's pretty easy to set up your networking in Vista.

Good luck!

Alternatives to itunes

like me, many of you might find itunes to be a little cumbersome to use. First off it's a fairly resource intensive program and can eat up quite a bit of your computer's power. Next, you can't transfer music from your ipod to your computer using itunes (not that I've been able to see anyway). From what i understand you need to make it so that your computer so that it recognizes the ipod as a hard disk, that's a whole different conversation so we'll save that for another discussion.

Frusrtrating huh? Well fear no more, I'd like to introduce you to Floola, a third part application that works in place of itunes. Floola is a simple program that doesn't take up alot of your computer's resources, it uses the same drag and drop features of itunes but looks alot less...what's the word...sexy! Now if you can't live without the aesthetic beauty of itunes then forget the rest of this posting, but if aesthetics isn't for you read on.

The main advantage that Floola has over itunes is....(drum roll please) you can actually transfer music from your ipod back to your computer! For me, that's enough to make the switch and although there isn't much else different that itunes, this difference is enough for most. If you'd like to download floola head over to http://www.floola.com/modules/wiwimod/ and hit the "download" tab.
